Galactic

Its been more than 20 years since Ben Ellman, Robert Mercurio, Stanton Moore, Jeff Raines and Rich Vogel began exploring the seemingly limitless musical possibilities born out of their work together as Galactic. Since then, the seminal New Orleans band has consistently pushed artistic boundaries on the road and in the studio, approaching their music with open ears and drawing inspiration as much from the sounds bubbling up from their citys streets as they do from each other. A key part of that creative spark comes from the teamwork of Mercurio and Ellman, whose ever-evolving production and arranging skills helped usher the band into a new phase of studio work beginning with the loop-centric Ruckus in 2007. A series of albums focused around specific concepts like Carnival followed, as did collaborations with guests hailing from worlds outside the one Galactic calls its own.On Into the Deep, the band members look within themselves instead, drawing inspiration from people and ideas that have long been close to their hearts and, in turn, close to the development of their unique sound. Shot through with soul, funk, blues and rock, the result is an organic riff on elements of Galactics past, filtered through the lens of where theyre headed in 2015. I see this album as a kind of culmination of all of our collaborations or experiences, from [trombonist] Corey Henry to the people we met on the road, touring, says Mercurio, referencing Ellmans first full-time gig in New Orleans, which kicked off when Henry hired him into the Little Rascals Brass Band in 1989. The previous albums took us in the opposite direction, Mercurio says. We collaborated with rappers that we had never dealt with and even on the New Orleans tracks, we didnt have working experience with most of those artists before the recordings. In contrast, Into the Deep contributors like JJ Grey, David Shaw and Maggie Koerner spent significant time touring with Galactic. A few years ago, Mavis Staples sat in with the band, all of whom are longtime fans of the legendary singers R&B-meets-gospel soul style. They caught up with Macy Gray when she performed a memorable concert at Tipitinas where Ellman says he could see from the outset how much she cares about the music. And each of the players had also developed a deep appreciation for the Honorable Souths Charm Taylor, whose contribution, Right On was written specifically to suit her vibe.Quint Davis [the producer of] Jazz Fest always has a couple people he books at the festival that arent big names but that Quint knows are going to be super cool, says Ellman. Thats how we met Brushy One-String. We originally wanted to bring him in to do anything, just to see what would happen. But when we heard his song Chicken in the Corn, we really wanted to do our version of it.In the end, he joined them on the road for over a month, collaborating with the band onstage at each show. For the instrumental tracks, Galactic mined the interests and tastes theyve cultivated together for years in New Orleans. Buck 77 was written via improvisation, a long-standing cornerstone of their live shows. The funky bass line and tumbling guitar part on Long Live the Borgne, meanwhile, represents an updated, more composed take on some of the concepts that made early albums like Coolin Off so strong. As for the opener Soogar Doosie, Ellman points out Galactic tends to record at least one track on each album that speaks to the bands collective love of brass band music. We write [those songs] with the idea of how awesome it would be to hear the Rebirth going down doing the street in a second line playing one of our songs. We try to think of a real second line song that would get people slapping stop signs and dancing on cars, he says. The album, Ellman says is all about people. Its these connections weve made over 20 years. Theyre people in our orbit that have come into our little world and affected us in some way.Its also about how the individual musicians within Galactic have grown over time. When it comes to trying new approaches as players, producers, songwriters and arrangers, Ellman muses, its an evolution.

Donavon Frankenreiter

To create his fifth full-length album Start Livin', Hawaii-based singer/guitarist/songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter holed up in a Southern California studio for seven days with his longtime bassist Matt Grundy - and no one else. The follow-up to 2010's Glow, Start Livin' is a nine-track selection of folk-infused songs that sweetly reflect the simplicity of their recording. With its smooth showcasing of Frankenreiter's rich, honey-thick vocals and masterful guitar work, Start Livin' bears all the intimacy of an impromptu back-porch performance and the tenderness of a treasured love letter. "Start Livin' is basically a love album," says Frankenreiter, who co-produced the record alongside Matt Grundy and Adam Ableman. "Most of the songs are about my wife and our two boys, and the life that we've built together in Hawaii." Thanks to Frankenreiter's infectious warmth and finely honed pop sensibilities, each of those songs has the singular effect of drawing the listener into that bright and breezy world for a blissed-out moment. Essential to the record's playful feel is Frankenreiter's inspired use of instrumentation. "This album's completely unlike anything I've ever done before, in that we skipped the basics and went for a whole lot of different instruments," he says. For Frankenreiter, the essence of Start Livin' is most fully captured in its album-opening title track. Accented by handclaps and a stick-in-your-head harmonies, "Start Livin'" is a feel-good, up-tempo call to "celebrate tonight." "To me the most beautiful thing about this record is it really reflects who I am today," says Frankenreiter. "Start Livin' means stop worrying about where you've been, where you're going-just start embracing what you have around you. Start loving what you have right now."

The Revivalists

The formation of The Revivalists was all about chance, but everythingsince then has been a combination of hard work, awesome music, andfriendship. The septet hasbeen playing nonstop since 2007, crafting agenre-hopping sound that rounds out traditional rock instrumentationwith horns and pedal steel guitar and mixes thedivergent backgrounds ofits individual members with the humid, funky undercurrents of theband's New Orleans home. The result is like English spoken with anexoticaccent: familiar, yet difficult to pin down.Religion aside, a revival is all about the tangible electricity thatcan only be created when enough like minds are crammed under a singleroof for a singular purpose. It'sa spiritual spectacle, a carnival ofthe divine, a whole greater than the sum of its parts. The same couldbe said for The Revivalists' searing live performances. The bandhas aknack for bringing music to life on a stage, and they have tuned theirtalents to Swiss-watch precision over years of relentless touring. Theirbombasticshowmanship is the outgrowth of a desire to connect withaudiences on a personal level, and that intimate connection is whatelevates their shows above simpleentertainment.True to their name, The Revivalists lean more heavily on the olderstyles and warmer sounds of the golden age of rock 'n roll, but the bandisn't afraid to dabble inelectronics and sleight-of-studio when it'sright for the song. The group tends not to bother with questions like"does this sound like us?" or "does this fit with our otherstuff?",instead allowing songs to define themselves and take shape organically, each on its own terms. Is this a dark, heavy rock manifesto driven by asteel guitar linethat borders on electronica, or is it an airy, acoustic story about star-crossed lovers, rich in vocal harmony andsparsely arranged until the coda? This one's funky, thatone's sweet, this one's heavy. To The Revivalists, it doesn't matter. They just write songs that they want to play.

Ripe

Ripe is a Funk/Pop band out of Boston, MA that was born as a result of our seven members' uniting over one belief: with enough passion and honesty, music can still make the earth shake. With one eye looking back to the inception of both funk and psychedelic music, and the other looking forward with a modern concept of what makes people move, Ripe seeks both to honor musical history as well as to make it. The perfect fruit is equal parts past and present, and this is the approach of the Ripe sound. With a strong devotion to consistently creating an unforgettable live experience, Ripe has kept the groove going from Vermont down to North Carolina, out to the Midwest, and back home in Boston and New York. With a recently released sophomore EP, 'Hey Hello,' and plans to start recording a full-length album in the coming year, Ripe is shifting into overdrive with every intention of taking this to the stratosphere. About the Book: Lisa Mattson thought she’d grow up to acquire a taste for cheap beer and guys named Bubba—not spend her weekends cruising through Napa vineyards in a convertible. When she flees the rural Midwest for the big city in her twenties, she struggles with naivety, insecurity and the double standards of dating, falling for a mind-numbing string of ex-boyfriends that hone her palate and guide her destiny. Grab a corkscrew and join Lisa on her not-so-straight-and-narrow road to a fabulous life in wine country where her glass—and her heart—are always full. The witty story of her raucous journey from lust to love and beer to wine, The Exes in My Glass: How I Refined My Taste in Men & Alcohol will leave you thirsty to uncork your true potential, too. About the Author: Lisa (Kermashek) Mattson is an award-winning wine blogger and former magazine editor with twenty years of experience in wine marketing. Her memoir, The Exes in My Glass: How I Refined My Taste in Men & Alcohol, takes Lisa from rural Kansas to South Florida’s beaches, the streets of New Orleans and the vineyards of Northern California, from naïve and love-lust while chasing pot-smoking scuba divers, waiters and models, to polished and savvy when pursued by winemakers and pro golfers. Raised in Kansas, Mattson grew up surrounded by shotguns and beer cans before moving to Florida and discovering wine during college. Her wine career began in South Florida at The Cellar Club at The Biltmore Hotel and The Wine News magazine. Since moving to Northern California in 2001, Mattson has worked for E&J Gallo Winery, Wilson Daniels Ltd. and is currently Director of Marketing & Communications for Jordan Vineyard & Winery. Collie Buddz

Light It Up, the new record from artist Collie Buddz, is momentous, gigantic and booming! Its immediately undeniable an awe-struck song complete with an unforgettable sing-along hook, the kind of beats that pound in the chest and a vocal performance that's as uncommon as it is infectious. A hit record is probably the only thing that makes Salaam Remi pause his day. Remi, most known as one of the top-selling music producers in the world [Fugees, Usher, Fergie, and Amy Winehouse] and Executive Vice-President at Sony Music knows an irrefutable song when he hears it. After discovering Light It Up, Remi made an offer to Collie Buddz to join his label imprint Louder Than Life, a division of Sony Music Entertainment. "Salaam knows music. It feels good. I want to reach a certain level with my career and go places I haven't gone yet. Being with Sony Music definitely helps with that," Buddz says with some anticipation. Light It Up, is a new anthem spreading across every college campus and radio stations, but the artist that created the tune has a name that may sound familiar to some music fans. Buddz exploded onto the scene a few years ago when critics and tastemakers alike embraced him - Spin Magazine proclaiming, "Buddz proves the pop rule: Catchiness transcends color." From Vibe Magazine to Entertainment Weekly, Collie Buddz made quite an impression with music critics. Produced by Neenyo, a protg of hit maker J.R. Rotem, Light It Up easily goes from the car to nightclubs all over the world. Collie details his process, "As an artist, I want to expand musically. I'll always do Reggae. I did Reggae music because I was good at it and that's what I knew and loved growing up. But at the same time, when I put on my producer hat and I hear a riddim, it might not be in my comfort range, but whatever I hear on the track dictates what I'm going to make. I really only care about making good music. For that to happen, it can't live in a box." Indeed growing up on the island of Bermuda, Reggae music was a formidable influence on a young Collie Buddz. Born Colin Harper in New Orleans, LA to a mother of Bermudian heritage with roots on the island dating back to the 1700s, his father passed away while Collie Buddz was at the tender age of four. At that time, his mother moved the family back home to Bermuda. It wasn't long before Buddz discovered more than his Bermudian heritage. Introduced to Reggae music by his older brother, Matthew, affectionately just known as "Smokey," by the tenderfoot age of 12, Colin Harper quickly learned his way around a music studio. It soon became apparent to everyone within earshot of the boy that his voice was unique in a way that lingers long after you've heard him. "Back then, I just used to plug headphones into the microphone jack of a tape deck. I'd sing into one of the earpieces and record it on cassette," Buddz recalls. Eventually, Smokey relocated to Toronto to pursue an audio engineering degree. His baby brother, as always, tagged along. But Buddz had plans of his own. And, by the age of 19, he was attending Full Sail Academy in Orlando, FL pursuing his own audio engineering degree. Only 13 months later, Buddz had that degree. With dreams of becoming a major music producer, Buddz rejoined his brother in Canada. As a producer, Buddz was the most comfortable in the studio. But he couldn't find any artists that could really pull off the sound he desired so Buddz far too often found himself just running back and forth from the vocal booth to the mixing booth as he layered his own vocals for his production work. After a while, it just became easier for him to just do it all by himself. At this juncture, Colin Harper became Collie Buddz. With his independent spirit guiding his journey, Buddz has traveled as far possible from his little corner of the earth. He's constantly creating new music and experimenting with it in front of live audiences almost immediately. With support from his team at Mojiza Management and touring and merchandising backing at Ineffable Music, Collie Buddz has toured the world. He's honed his craft while in support of several tours with artists such as Cypress Hill, Rebelution and Matisyahu. He's performed in front of thousands at the largest music festivals such as Lollapalooza, Boomtown, Summer Jam and the California Roots Festival. While touring, Buddz still found time to record new material and release original music independently on his own record label, Harper Digital. He's even managed to launch a new radio station back home in Bermuda (Vibe 103) and become a father.

G.Love Solo

Twenty years after the release of their self-titled debut and eight years since their last live performance together, the original lineup of G. Love & Special Sauce return with their first album in nearly a decade. Built on the trios signature hip-hop blues sound, Sugar finds vocalist/guitarist/harmonica player G. Love (aka Garrett Dutton), upright bassist James Jimi Jazz Prescott, and drummer Jeffrey The Houseman Clemens breathing new life into their groove-heavy, Chicago-blues-infused brand of stripped-down rock & roll. The goal for the album was to make it really raw and immediate, with live takes and live vocals and everybody playing so that it all comes together in that intangible way, says G. Love. Thats what our music is all about. Recorded mainly at Brushfire Records Solar Powered Plastic Plant studio in Los Angeles, Sugar captures the unstoppable energy of a band who got their start in Boston bars in the early 90s and still play up to 150 shows a year. We wanted to take it back to the old-school vibe of the first record, those rich, warm sounds from when we were rocking small clubs and going on that acoustic feeling, says Prescott. To deepen that dynamic and push their sound into new directions, G. Love & Special Sauce called in guest musicians like Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo (who appears on three of the albums tracks), soul/R&B singer/songwriter Marc Broussard, and the legendary vocalist Merry Clayton (best known for her duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones Gimme Shelter). Recording at Brushfire was one of those super-magical sessionsit just felt right and really true to the style of this band, notes G. Love, who also recorded several of Sugars tracks in Seattle with Clemens and bassist Timo Shanko. While most of the first songs G. Love penned for Sugar were written in response to a recent breakup, the album ended up morphing into a gritty but joyful look at the thrill and grind of getting by as a musician. At the albums heart is the swaggering title track, which fuses Elmore James-inspired slide licks with big and bouncy hip-hop beats. That mood is matched on tracks like Good Life (a Bo Diddley-style jam powered by the fiery guitar work of David Hidalgo), Saturday Night (a steamy serenade to New York City, laced with sultry vocals by Alabama-bred folk/soul singer/songwriter Kristy Lee), and Weekend Dance (an all-out party anthem fueled by sweet and smoldering horns, co-written by Eric Krasno and featuring rapper Shamarr Allen). Meanwhile, Too Much Month serves as a brilliantly bittersweet ode to being broke (I got too much month for the end of my money/And not enough money for the end of the month), and Nite Life slyly warns of the dangers of rock & roll living in its groove-laden take on John Lee Hookers Whiskey and Wimmin. Peppered throughout Sugar are a handful of love songs of all stripes, from the moody, brooding breakup ballad Windshield Wipers to the bruised but breezy Cheating Heart (featuring Eric Krasno on lead guitar and background vocals) to Bad Girl Baby Blues (an acoustic, guitar-and-vocals-only track whose lyrics spin a daydream tale of an ideal night at home, complete with drinking red wine out of pawn-shop-bought glasses). And on One Night Romance (written by Kristy Lee and featuring vocals from both Lee and Merry Clayton), Sugar turns soulful and seductive in its harmony-soaked plea to come get unlonely with me. In bringing Sugar to life, G. Love & Special Sauce mined musical sources as varied as the hypnotic blues-guitar work of John P. Hammond and John Lee Hooker, the boundary-bending rhythms of The Meters and Lee Dorsey, and the infectious beats and seamless flow of hip-hop pioneers like A Tribe Called Quest, The Beastie Boys, and De La Soul. And although each band member brings his own distinct influences to their creative collaborationG. Loves lyrics draw inspiration from the street-wise storytelling of Lou Reed, Prescott is highly studied in New Orleans jazz, and Clemenss drumming references everything from early-70s Nigerian funk to the rocksteady era of reggaeSugar again reveals the uncommon intensity and power of their musical synergy. Theres a certain natural, unspoken chemistry between the three of us, says Clemens. Because were all very different individuals and oftentimes do our best communicating through our instruments, were able to meet in a musical conversation where others might not be able to. For G. Love & Special Sauce, that conversation began back in 1993, when G. Love serendipitously took the stage as a fill-in opening act at the Irish pub where Clemenss then-girlfriend waited tables. Id had this idea that I needed to find a kid who could play blues but also rap, and thats exactly what I got, says Clemens. It was like, This is the kid thats speaking the language I hear in my head. Then 19, G. Love had recently moved to Boston from his native Philadelphia, where he first picked up a guitar at age eight and spent much of his teen years as a street musician. I grew up right by a place called South Street where there were a lot of street performers, from puppeteers to this guy playing Mozart on wine glasses to classical guitar players, he says. One night I was out there and I finished playing a riff on my song and started rapping the lyrics to Paid in Full by Eric B. & Rakim over a groove, and I was like, Holy shitthats it. Heading to Boston the same summer he first started developing that hip-hop/blues hybrid, G. Love quickly connected with Clemens, who then tapped Prescott (a local musician hed met through a jazz jam session). Within a week the three got together for a rehearsalfeaturing G. Love on Dobro guitar, Clemens on a vintage drum kit with brushes instead of sticks, and Prescott on upright bassand soon began working on songs for their debut album. Propelled by hit singles like Cold Beverage and Babys Got Sauce, G. Love and Special Sauce ultimately reached gold status and helped the band build a following that endures today. One of the songs originally written for that album (and inspired by G. Loves early days in Boston and those nights when I would just walk around and try to get somebody to buy me a pint of Jim Beam), Run for Me makes its first-ever recorded appearance on Sugar and remains timeless in its portrait of the struggle of pursuing a musical passion. At first I thought this record was gonna be a heartbreak record about my old relationship, but then the sentiment shifted, says G. Love. A lot of the songs became about coming up from where we started to where are now and still keeping it going, still staying afloat, he continues. To me thats a much more interesting story to tell.
